Jenkins Jazz Heritage

Jenkins' 2025-2026 Jazz Initiative focuses on a Series of Jazz Projects performed by Jenkins House Band and other local bands and performers.

Founded in 1891 by Reverend Daniel Joseph Jenkins, the Jenkins Orphanage became a beacon of hope, opportunity, and cultural impact during a transformative period in American history. What began as a mission to care for vulnerable African American children grew into one of the most influential musical legacies in the world.

Through discipline, education, faith, and music, the Jenkins Orphanage Band introduced generations of young musicians to opportunity while helping shape the early sounds of jazz. From the streets of Charleston to international stages across the United States and Europe, the legacy of Jenkins became a global story of resilience, talent, and cultural excellence.

Today, that legacy continues to live on through the ongoing work of Jenkins Youth & Family Village and the generations connected to Reverend Jenkins’ vision, including his great-grandson, Tuffus Zimbabwe. Through music, education, community engagement, and historical preservation, the spirit of Jenkins continues to honor the past while inspiring future generations.

More Than Music

The Jenkins Jazz Heritage Project uses music, storytelling, education, and cultural preservation to connect new generations to the rich legacy of Jenkins while creating opportunities for creativity, mentorship, and community engagement.

Through performances, educational experiences, youth involvement, and historical programming, the initiative celebrates the enduring influence of the Jenkins Orphanage Band while helping students and families explore the power of music, culture, and heritage in shaping the future.

Rooted in history but focused on impact, the project serves as both a tribute to the past and a platform for future generations to learn, create, and grow.
